Box Score 2 ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Chowan University baseball team opened their three-game CIAA series with Elizabeth City State University with a doubleheader sweep this afternoon. The Hawks beat the Vikings with scores of 9-2 and 11-4 to move to 16-17 on the year and 7-4 in league play. Chowan slugged out 24 hits over two games to take the first two games of the series.
Both teams were scoreless in the first game until the third inning when CU scored two runs.
Ryan Moore drilled a two-run homer in the fifth inning to add to their lead and exploded for four runs in their final at-bat to take the 9-2 win. The Hawks pounded out 12 hits in the win.
Josh Catalano was perfect at the plate. He finished up 3-3 with three runs scored and two doubles.
Brandon Mack and
Dallas Perdue had two hits and an RBI in the win.
Brett Garrett pitched the win on the mound and picked up his 4th win of the season. He gave up 10 hits and gave up two runs. He also struck out five batters to run his season strike outs to a team-high 37.
Chowan didn't let up offensively in the nightcap with 11 runs on 12 hits.
Justin Bagbey came up big for Chowan after going 5-5 with three singles, a double, and a homerun. He accounted for six of the team's 11 total runs. Mack had the team's only other multiple hit game after going 2-3 with two runs scored.
John DesChamps picked up his 5th win of the season on the mound. He pitched five innings where he gave up six hits and one earned run. He struck out four Viking batters.
Evan Hart picked up his 3rd save of the year after tossing the last two innings. He gave up a run and struck out two.
The two teams will wrap up the CIAA series tomorrow in Elizabeth City. The game will be played at Pasquotank High School at 2:00pm.
