CU Softball Drops Two to West Virginia State

CU's Amber Matthews was 3-4 with three doubles in first game of DH
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - West Virginia State University grounded the Chowan University Hawks this afternoon with a doubleheader nonconference sweep. The Hawks lost with scores of 7-6 and 6-1 to fall to 11-23 on the season. Chowan rallied for a near comeback in the first game but it was stopped just one run short. The Yellow Jackets held Chowan to just three hits in the second game for the 6-1 win. WVSU improved to 14-5 after today's games. 

Chowan pounded out 11 hits in the first game, led by Amber Matthews. The junior shortstop was 3-4 with three doubles and an RBI in the game. Chowan got behind 6-1 heading into their fifth at-bat of the game before they put up three runs to cut the West Virginia State lead to 6-4. WVSU added another run in their next at-bat to go up 7-4 over Chowan heading into their final at-bat. The Hawks rallied to score two runs in the seventh but fell just short of a full on comeback. 

Allie Kolezynski pitched 4.1 innings for the loss on the mound. She gave up two earned runs and eight hits before being relieved by Alora Lincoln. Lincoln closed the game out and gave up three runs on six hits. Kolezynski was 2-2 at the plate while Liz Hipple finished up 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Leigh Ward was 2-3 with two runs scored. 

The Yellow Jackets held Chowan to three hits in the nightcap and garnered 12 of their own for the 6-1 win over the Hawks. 

The Hawks will travel to Shaw this Friday for their next outing.
