MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University softball team picked up a doubleheader split in Saturday afternoon softball action at Hawks Field against Conference Carolinas divisional foe, Francis Marion University. After dropping the first game of the doubleheader 10-1, the Hawks bounced back to take the nightcap in thrilling fashion with a score of 4-3.
The Hawks moved to 21-16 over and 11-9 in league play after Saturday's split. Today's game two win marks the first win over the Patriots for the Hawks since the two first played one another in 2008.

Game One
Chowan was held to four hits in game one, led by Lenita Bryson who went 2-2 at the plate and accounted for the Hawks only run with an RBI single in the 4th inning. Ava Mizell continued her 13 game hit streak with a 1-3 plate performance, followed by Makenzi Curry (6-7) who also collected a hit. Curry suffered the loss on the mound after starting the game and tossing 2 innings. Abby Rutledge and Callie Tyndall each threw in relief.
Game Two
Chowan's Emily Fowler (6-6) pitched a gem in the nightcap win. The junior hurler held the Patriots to just seven hits and three runs while striking out four patriot batters. Callie Tyndall piggy backed off Fowler's 5 innings, to hold the Patriots hitless in the 6th inning. Abby Rutledge picked up her 5th save of the season, striking out two Patriot batters and getting out of late rally by the Patriots in their final at-bat.
Offensively, FMU struck first in the game, getting on the board in the 2nd inning, 2-0. Chowan's Lenita Bryson doubled to knock in a run and Hydee Kugler singled to score Bryson to knot the game at 2-2 through two innings. FMU's Rylee Gray accounted for a solo homerun in the 4th inning and the Hawks combination of Bryson-Kugler showed up big for the Hawks in the bottom of the fourth. Bryson singled in Kaitlyn Springle to tie the game at 3-3 and Kugler's RBI single to score Calliope James was enough to get ahead of the Patriots 4-3, and get the eventual win.
Mizell collected 2 hits while Kugler went 3-3 with two RBI and Bryson added two hits and two RBI. Mizell ran her hit streak to 14 games after her nightcap, 2 hit performance.

The Hawks will continue with their Conference Carolinas play when UNC-Pembroke comes to town for a double dip on Wednesday, April 1st. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm at Hawks Field.
