Mizell Stays Hot as Hawks Sweep Trojans for 22nd and 23rd Wins of the Season

ETTRICK, VA -The Chowan University softball team picked up a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Virginia State University on Friday afternoon. The Hawks held the Trojans scoreless in game one, using a seven-run fifth inning to secure a 10-0 run-rule victory, before taking game two, 5-2. With the wins, Chowan improves to 23-16 on the season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

Game One 

Chowan opened the scoring in the first inning as Kaitlyn Springle doubled to left field to bring home Kyra Helton. Ava Mizell added to the lead in the second with an RBI single, scoring Alexis Denham.

The Hawks broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating seven runs. Kyndall Hopkins drew a bases-loaded walk to score Hope Soria, while Helton later crossed the plate on a Trojan error. Additional runs came from Hopkins, Ryleigh Gough, Denham, and Calliope James to seal the 10-0 decision.

Helton and Denham each scored twice, while Springle recorded two hits and a run. Mizell, Soria, and James each added a hit and a run, with Hopkins and Gough also crossing the plate. Lenita Bryson chipped in with a hit in the contest.

Mackenzi Curry got the start in the circle, tossing 3.1 innings before Abby Rutledge closed out the final 1.2 innings. Rutledge did not allow a hit, as the duo combined to limit Virginia State to just three hits.

Game Two
The Hawks again struck early, taking advantage of a Trojan error that allowed Helton to reach and Mizell to score. Curry followed with an RBI single to center field, bringing in Springle.

Mizell extended the lead in the second inning with a solo home run to left field. She later added a two-run double, driving in Calliope James and Julianna Kellogg to finish with three RBI in the game.

Mizell led the offense with three hits and two runs scored. James added two hits and a run, while Springle and Kellogg each scored. Soria, Curry, and Denham also recorded hits in the win.

Emily Fowler started in the circle for the Hawks tossing 2.1 innings before Rutledge would come in for relief and pitch the final 4.2 innings to pick up the win.

UP NEXT 

The Hawks return home to host University of North Carolina at Pembroke in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 7. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m., with game two scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
