Box Score MURFREESBORO - Virginia State University silenced Chowan University's bats this afternoon to take game three of the CIAA baseball series. The Trojans held the Hawks to just seven hits in the 3-0 game. Chowan knocked on the door in both the third and sixth innings but VSU kept them from crossing the plate in both at-bats. Chowan falls to 14-17 on the year and 5-4 in the league. Chowan won the first game of the series but VSU took the last two. The Trojans improve to 10-11 overall and 4-4 in the CIAA.
CU senior righthander,
Ryan Bradshaw , went to the mound looking for his fourth win of the season but didn't get the run support he needed to make that happen. Bradshaw pitched six innings. He gave up five hits and two earned runs and struck out two Trojan batters to suffer his fourth loss of the season.
Evan Hart came in for relief of Bradshaw and also had a solid outing. Hart threw 3.0 innings and scattered three hits in 12 batters faced.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the Hawks loaded the bases and missed an opportunity to score.
Colby Wiggins and
Josh Catalano garnered back to back singles to open the inning.
Brandon Mack laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position at 2nd and 3rd bases respectively. With one out,
Justin Bagbey drew a walk to load the bases .
Evan Seymour flied out to right field but not deep enough to score Wiggins from third on a tag up for the second out. Willie Ward struck out to end the inning.
The Trojans added another run to their lead in the 6th inning. In the bottom of the that inning Chowan had runners at 2nd and 3rd bases after Seymour reached on an error and Bagbey boomed a ground rule double. Both runners were thrown out at the plate on attempts to score later in the inning.
The VSU pitching staff went to work to keep Chowan from plating any runs for the 3-0 shut out.
The Hawks will travel to Elizabeth City State University next weekend for a three-game series with the Vikings.
