CU Baseball Splits Play with Virginia State

CU's Brett Overton was 2-3 in the 3-2 first game win
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University baseball team split a doubleheader with Virginia State University in CIAA baseball action this afternoon. The Hawks improve their record to 14-15 on the year and 5-3 in league play. The Hawks got solid pitching out of their staff this afternoon but their bats went cold when it counted in the night cap. Virginia State improves their record to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the CIAA after today's games.

Brett Garrett (3-2) pitched a three-hitter in the first game, helping the team to a 3-2 win. Garrett threw the complete game and struck out two for his third win of the season. The Hawks picked up all three of their runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Brandon Mack drove in two runs in the inning  to help lead the Hawks to the 3-2 win. Brett Overton was 2-3 at the plate and Colby Wiggins was 1-2 with a run scored. 

The Hawks struggled at the plate in the second game as Virginia State pitching held them to just five hits over seven innings. The Hawks' top pitcher of record, John DesChamps , (4-5) started the game on the mound. He threw 5.1 innings and gave up eight hits and two earned runs. He struck out six Trojan batters in the game. Evan Hart threw the final 1.1 innings. He gave up a hit and struck out two batters. 

Chowan scored two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 2-1lead but Virginia State answered with two runs of their own in the top of the 6th inning. Those two runs would be enough to hold off the Hawks and give VSU the 3-2 win. 

The two teams will wrap up the three-game CIAA series on Sunday with a 2:00pm single, nine game.
