Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University baseball team improved to 13-14 on the year after splitting a twin bill session with Millersville University this afternoon. Chowan overcame a three run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the first game with a final score of 6-5. The Marauders bounced back in the night cap and used 20 hits to down the Hawks 16-9.
CU righthander
Evan Hart gave up a run in the top of the first inning but settled down over the next two innings to keep the #4 Atlantic Region ranked team off the board. The Marauders posted three runs in the top of the 4th inning to take a 4-1 lead over Chowan. But the comeback kids weren't done, even facing a 5-2 deficit heading into their final at-bat.
Trailing by two, CU's
Colby Wiggins got the rally started with a one-out double to left center field. Centerfielder
Josh Catalano grounded out to second base for the second out but Wiggins advanced to third base. Catalano's out brought up the hot hitting Hawks shortstop,
Brandon Mack. He kept the rally going with a two-out double down the right field line, which scored Wiggins from third base. Mack's RBI cut the Marauder lead to 5-3 with two outs.
Evan Seymour stepped to the plate where he beat out a throw from the left side of the infield for another Hawk hit. Seymour's infield single moved Mack to third. And with two outs,
Justin Bagbey stepped up to the plate. MU's Jason Long made the mistake of leaving a fast ball up in the zone for Bagbey who drove the ball to straight away centerfield where it cleared the fence easily. Bagbey's three run homerun was enough to give Chowan the 6-5 comeback win.
Seymour ended the game 3-4 at the plate while Bagbey was 2-4.
Josh Catalano was 2-3 with a run scored. Hart pitched six innings. He gave up seven hits and four runs and struck out two.
Anthony O'Brien pitched the last inning and picked up the win. He gave up two hits and a run in seven batters faced.
The Marauders used a 10 third inning to go on to a 16-9 win in the nightcap. MU put up 3 runs to open the game but the Hawks posted nine runs of their own in their first at-bat to take an earlu 9-3 win. But the 10 runs in the 3rd were too much to overcome for the Hawks and they fell 16-9. MU exploded for 20 hits in the game and held Chowna to nine.
Ryan Moore (2-3) pitched the loss. He threw 2.1 innings where he gave up nine hits and 10 runs.
Dallas Perdue pitched in relief. He threw 3.2 innings and gave up five runs in middle relief.
William Ward closed the game out on the mound.
Blake Leebrick was 2-2 with a double and two runs knocked in in the loss and Mack was 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow with a single, nine inning game set to start at 1:00pm.
