HARTSVILLE, SC – Chowan University split a doubleheader with Coker College on Sunday to move to 3-1 on the early 2012 season. Coker picked up their first victory to improve to 1-4. Chowan won game one 4-3, and fell in the nightcap 5-4.
The Hawks used a balanced offensive attack through both games, as nine different players recorded at least one hit.
Ryan Bradshaw threw all seven innings in game one, allowing three runs off eight hits. He struck out two batters.
Colby Wiggins and
Blake Leebrick each had RBI singles in the first inning to put the Hawks up 2-0. Then in the fifth inning,
Josh Catalano and
Brandon Mack scored to put Chowan up 4-1.
Coker added two runs in the home half of the sixth, but Bradshaw sealed the victory in the seventh. Catalano scored two runs in the game, and
Ryan Moore added another RBI.
Game two was scoreless until Coker scored in the bottom of the third inning. From there, both offenses were strong, as each inning saw at least one team score.
William Ward scored in the fifth inning after nailing a triple down the right field line to tie the game at two. Coker responded, though, with two runs in the bottom of the 5
th to go ahead 4-2. Wiggins and
Justin Shockley then had back-to-back RBI in the 6
th to knot the game at four.
With two outs in the bottom of the 7
th, Coker's Fico Kondla drove in Keith Wolf to give the Cobras their first victory of the season.
Freshman
Evan Hart threw five innings in his collegiate debut, striking out one and allowing four runs (three earned). Catalano and Mack each recorded two hits, and Wiggins hit his second triple of the season.
Chowan will return to action this Tuesday and Wednesday, February 7
th and 8
th, when they host UNC-Pembroke. Games will begin at 3:00pm each day.
