Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE, SC - The Chowan University baseball team jumps out to a good start to the 2012 season after edging Coker College in a doubleheader this afternoon. Chowan won with final scores of 3-2 and 6-5 to move to 2-0 on the season. Head Coach
Taylor Furlough picks up his first wins as a collegiate head coach after today's thrilling wins.
Willie Ward scored in the top of the 10th inning to give Chowan the go ahead run in the first game of the doubleheader. He reached base that inning after being hit by a pitch. He stole second base and then advanced home after a pick off attempt resulted in an error on the Cobras.
Chowan's
Ryan Moore came in to throw the last four innings to pick up the win on the mound. Moore tossed four innings, giving up two hits and striking out five Coker batters.
Brett Garrett started the game. He threw five innings, struck out five batters, and gave up three hits and two runs. Chowan tallied five team hits in the win with
Colby Wiggins going 1-4 with 2 runs scored.
Chowan edged out the Cobras in the nightcap with a 6-5 win. A four-run sixth inning capped off with a three RBI triple by
Justin Shockley helped propel the Hawks to their second win of the season.
John DesChamps threw six innings for the win. He scattered five hits and gave up one earned run in the win.
Evan Hart picked up the save in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Josh Catalano and
Brandon Mack each collected two hits for the Hawks.
Blake Leebrick went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Hawks will play Coker tomorrow in another doubleheader to wrap up the four-game series. They will open home season play next weekend against Mercyhurst University on February 11-12th.
