LAURINBURG, NC – The Chowan University baseball team swept host St. Andrews University in a pair of completely different games on Wednesday. Pitching dominated game one, with
Brett Garrett throwing a gem for the Hawks. Chowan won the opener 2-1 in eight innings. The nightcap was all about the Chowan offense, which pounded out 13 hits, en route to a 12-3 victory.
Chowan improves to 5-6 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-6. Garrett tossed all eight innings in the opener, allowing only three hits and striking out eight. He lowered his season ERA to a team-best 2.37.
Josh Catalano singled to start game one, and later scored on a
Justin Bagbey single. On the mound, Garrett was perfect through 3.2 innings, until Matthew Beauchemin doubled and later scored, to tie the game at one.
Both offenses were stagnant over the next three innings, pushing the game into extras.
Evan Seymour started the eighth inning with a double, and then
Ryan Moore drove him in with a one-out single. Seymour recorded two hits in the game; the only player on either team to have more than one hit.
Garrett put the Knights down in order in the home half of the eighth to seal the victory.
Game two was nothing like game one, as a total of 15 runs were scored off 20 hits. St. Andrews struck first, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After getting just one hit in the first two innings, the Hawks' offense came alive in the top of the third. They tallied two singles and two doubles in the frame, and each of the first five batters scored.
Seymour continued his hot hitting with a bases-clearing double, and he would score on a Bagbey double. Seymour had four hits in the doubleheader, and drove in four runs. Bagbey collected three hits and two RBI.
St. Andrews closed the scoring gap to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the third, but Chowan's offense was far from being done. They added one run in the fourth inning, and put the first three batters on base in the fifth. With the bases loaded,
Ryan Moore stepped to the plate and belted a grand slam, his first home run of the season, to give Chowan a commanding 10-3 advantage.
Justin Shockley and Moore scored in the seventh inning to cap the convincing victory. Moore then went out to the mound in the bottom of the seventh and struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 inning.
Tyler Ross,
Ryan Bradshaw, and
John DesChamps each threw two innings for Chowan. DesChamps (1-1) picked up the win, allowing two hits and striking out three. Ross also struck out three Knights' batters.
Five Hawks collected two hits in game two, while Seymour and Moore each had four RBI.
Chowan will host East Stroudsburg University this weekend in a pair of doubleheaders. Game time will be 12:00 noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
