Baseball Drops Season Opener to Coker

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE, SC - The baseball team opened the 2010 season with two tough road losses today at Coker College. The Hawks fell with final scores of 11-8 and 9-5 in the non-conference doubleheader. Chowan tallied 23 hits over two games but Coker managed to pick up runs when it counted to sweep the doubleheader. 

Trailing heading into the 6th inning, the Hawks used a five-run at bat to take a narrow 8-7 lead over the Cobras. But Coker scored four runs in their next at-bat to take an 11-8 lead and eventual win. 

Andrew Hales picked up the loss on the mound after coming in for relief in the 5th for Ryan Bradshaw . Hales picked 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs. Bradshaw came out in the 5th after giving up nine hits and seven runs. 

John Kellett was 4-4 with three RBI and two runs scores. Both Mike Taylor and Zac Caito were 2-3 at the plate in the game. 

The Hawks fell 9-5 in the nightcap despite out hitting the Cobras 11-10. John Atkins was credited with the loss after starting the game on the mound. He pitched four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. Tyler King came in to pitch the last two innings of the game. He gave up three hits and four runs in the game. 

Kellett stayed hot in game two, going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Justin Bagbey was 2-4 with two RBI. Nate Stanton was 2-2 with a run scored and a run knocked in. 

The Hawks will make their home season debut this weekend when Shepherd University comes to town on Friday for a three-game weekend series. First pitch is set for 1:00pm on Friday afternoon.
