Hawks Tennis Opens Season against NCAA D1 Hampton University

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University tennis teams opened play in their championship season on Sunday with a dual match against Hampton University. The Chowan men's team battled to 3-4 decision, picking up wins at the #1 doubles, #3 doubles, and the #5 and #6 singles positions. The women's team picked up a hard fought win at the #1 singles position as Marcia Aragon won in a three-set tie breaker.

Teams/Records: Women: Chowan (0-1), Hampton (1-3) | Men: Chowan (0-1), Hampton (1-5) 

Final Scores: Women: Chowan 1, Hampton 6 | Men: Chowan 3, Hampton 4

INSIDE THE RESULTS 

On the men's side the Hawks took 2 out of 3 doubles matches to gain an early 1-0 point lead over the Pirates. Marcel Ungerboeck and Tadeo Missan joined efforts to take Hampton's top doubles team 6-2. David De Simon and Terumasa Inoue won the #3 doubles match by default. 

Inoue went on to pick up a singles win (6-4, 6-2) at the #5 singles position while Tadeo Sanchez won the #6 singles match by default. 

Ultimately the Pirates won four of the six singles matches to take the come from behind, 4-3 win over the Hawks. 

On the women's side #1 singles Marcia Aragon battled out a three set thriller with Hampton's #1 singles player. Aragon lost the first set 7-6 (7-2), but gutted out a 6-3 second set to knot the match at 1-1. Aragon battled to a 10-8 third set tie breaker to take the singles match. 

UP NEXT

The Hawks will hit the court on Tuesday, March 3rd when they travel over to Elizabeth City State University for a tri-match with the Vikings and Virginia State University. They return home to host Davis and Elkins on Wednesday, March 4th at 3:00 PM at the Rose Family Tennis Courts.
