CU Swimming Shines in Dual Meet against Peace Pacers

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University men's and women's swim teams hosted Peace University in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon in their home season debut. The Hawks marked the event with a double win on both the men's and women's sides, giving newly hired head coach, Lucas Pels, his first collegiate wins.

Chowan took first place in 18 of the 28 total events in Saturday's meet. The Hawks set the tone early in the meet with back-to-back relay wins to open the meet. Emma Rooney, Vanja Romic, Lina Danna, and Hasnae Idrissi touched the wall at 2:19.14 in the 200 IM relay while the men followed that up with a 1:52.65 first place finish behind Robert LIz Cabrera, Alekseii Belolipetskii, Dimitrije Markovic, and Michael Grenier

Rooney and Griener took top places finishes in the 1500 meter freestyle with times of 19:56.68 and 18:28.71 respectively. Markovic touched the wall at 2:00.40, a full :18 seconds faster than the next wall touch, in the 200 meter freestyle for first place. Stefan Reedy placed second at 2:18.60. Sara Turanjanin led the Hawks in the 100 backstroke, finishing at 1:10.81, :18 seconds ahead of the next swimmer to touch the wall. Quintin Mitchell finished in 2nd place in the 100 backstroke with teammate Vanja Romic taking first place in the same event on the women's side with a time of 1:21.50. 

Belolipetskii took first place in the 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:08.73. The women took the top three spots in the 50 meter freestyle with Turanjanin touching the wall first at 29.30. Idrissi and Ariana Vizcaya finished 2nd and 3rd with times of 31.38 and 32.31 respectively. Liz Cabrera took the top spot in the men's 50 freestyle (23.90) with Christoper Goode finishing 3rd (28.09) and Nasir Fernandez and Julius Riley getting 5th and 6th place. 

Lina Danna finished 1st in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:07.73 followed by Elizabeth Waltz who touched the wall at 1:28.53. Liz Cabrera took 1st in the 100 meter freestyle on the men's side with a finishing time of 54.65, followed by Reedy and Goode with times of 59.63 and 1:07.81 respectively. 

Idrissi took home another event win in the 200 meter backstroke with a time of 2:50.28 and Romic finished first in the 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 3:03.62. Belolipetskii took home the top finish in the 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:32.68 followed closely by Grenier who finished at 2:34.55. 

Markovic and Rooney finished 1st on the men's and women's 400 meter freestyle with finishing times of 4:31.06 and 5:06.59 respectively. Mitchell took 2nd in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:08.21 and 1st in the 200 meter IM. Chowan took the top spots in the last two relays of the day with the women's team of Danna, Romic, Rooney, and Turanjanin claiming the 200 meter freestyle relay with a time of 2:02.39. 

The men's 200 meter freestyle team of Mitchell, Grenier, Goode, and Reedy  wrapped the meet up with a first place finish with a time of 1:48.15. Belolipetskii, Liz Cabrera, Nelson Fernandez, and Markovic took 2nd place with a time of 1:51.09. 

UP NEXT 

The Hawks will have a week to recover before heading to Barton College on Saturday, November 8th for a dual meet with Barton College.
