NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Chowan Softball team dropped a pair of contests on the final day of the Newberry Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

Serena Riley paced the Hawks with four hits going 3-4 in the opener. Paige Wilhelm, Kaitlin Brunelli, and Mya Horne tallied two hits each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chowan 4, Concord 8
Chowan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Kaitlin Brunelli singled up the middle to lead-off the inning. Jesse Gentry drew a walk before Mya Horne singled to plate the opening run of the contest.
The Mountain Lions rallied in the bottom of the third inning to plate three runs to lead 3-1 on four extra base hits.
The Hawks looked to add a run in the top of the fourth as Kaitlin Brunelli doubled to left followed by a single by Serena Riley. Meredith Morgan put both runners in scoring position on a sacrifice bunt but a strikeout would end the threat.
Concord used a pair of errors and three hits to open the score to 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Chowan's rally in the top of the seventh came up short despite a three run frame. Mya Horne singled to center to open the inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. Paige Wilhelm reached on an infield single before moving to second on an error allowing Horne to score. Courtney Lamb drew a walk before another miscue allowed Wilhelm to score on Hannah Eden's batted ball. Serena Riley produced a RBI single to center for the final tally in the contest.
Chowan 0, Newberry 12 (five innings)
Hannah Eden singled in the top of the first before Newberry scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 3-0.
The Wolves added three runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the third to extend their advantage to 8-0.
Jesse Gentry picked up a single in the second and Serena Riley singled in the fourth for the final two hits for the Hawks.
Newberry tallied four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held the Hawks scoreless in the fifth for the run-rule victory.

Chowan will continue their road swing as the Hawks travel to Wise, Va. to take on UVA-Wise on Saturday, February 12. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1pm.
