WISE, VA. – The Chowan Softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests on the road against UVa-Wise on Friday afternoon despite late inning comebacks.

Jesse Gentry paced the offense with three extra base hits and two RBI in the doubleheader. Kaitlin Brunelli and Courtney Lamb added three hits each. Haleigh Reid and Paige Wilhelm posted two hits each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 3, UVa-Wise 7
Chowan jumped on the board in the top of the second inning as Kaitlin Brunelli singled to lead off the inning. Brunelli would advance to second on a Cavalier miscue before Madison Dilday scampered home on Jesse Gentry's double to left field, pinch running from Brunelli, to lead 1-0.
UVa-Wise answered in the bottom of the second on a pair of walks and an infield single to knot the contest at 1-all.
The Cavaliers would take control of the contest in the bottom of the third inning as a two-out walk loaded the bases. The Cavs would take advantage with a grand slam to lead 5-1. UVa-Wise tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to lead 7-1.
The Hawks looked to rally in the fifth inning as Courtney Lamb and Meredith Morgan picked up singles in the inning to put runners on the corners but were left stranded.
Chowan clawed back in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs as Serena Riley led off the inning with a single. Jesse Gentry doubled down the left field line before Mya Horne drew a walk to load the bases. Haleigh Reid and Courtney Lamb put the ball in play to score Riley and Gentry to close the gap to 7-3.
In the top of the seventh, Kaitlin Brunelli singled up the middle before moving to second on a ground out. Jesse Gentry doubled to left before the final out at the plate.
Game Two: Chowan 3, UVa-Wise 4
The Cavs posted two runs in the bottom of the third inning on three hits to lead 2-0 early.
Chowan was able to scratch across a run in the top of the fourth inning as Kaitlin Brunelli led off the inning with a single to left. Haleigh Reid doubled to left allowing the pinch running Cailyn Nowell to score, 2-1.
UVa-Wise increased their lead in the fifth inning on three hits to lead 4-1 on a pair of two-out base hits.
The Hawks would answer in the top of the sixth inning as Hannah Eden started the inning off reaching on an error. Mary-Grace Crosby pinch ran for Eden and swiped second. Crosby would come around to score on Serena Riley's double to right center. Riley moved to third on a muffed throw before scoring on Jesse Gentry's sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Chowan would get out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double play with two runners in scoring position.
Courtney Lamb produced a one-out double but was unable to plate the tying run.
