MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team opened up the first day of the Hawks Softball Classic on the short end falling to Mars Hill and Frostburg State on Saturday.

Paige Wilhelm led the Hawks with four hits. Haleigh Reid added three hits, while Kaitlin Brunelli and Serena Riley tallied two hits each. Brunelli posted a home run and a double.
Bailey Wilcox pitched 4.1 innings in relief allowing two hits and picking up a career-high 11 strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chowan 4, Mars Hill 6
Chowan looked to put a run on the board in the bottom of the first as Paige Wilhelm was hit by a pitch on the first pitch of the inning. Wilhelm would move around to third on a pair of outs before being left stranded.
Mars Hill broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third as an error allowed the Mountain Lions to continue the inning and plate a pair of unearned runs, 2-0.
The Hawks rallied in the bottom of the fourth as Kaitlin Brunelli led off the inning with a double. Elizabeth Heller, pinch running for Brunelli, scored on the single by Serena Riley. Riley would score on Haleigh Reid's double down the left field line to even the score, 2-all.
The Mountains Lions regained the lead in the fifth inning on a RBI triple, 3-2.
Chowan answered in the bottom of the inning as Paige Wilhelm reached on an infield single. Wilhelm moved to second on Meredith Morgan's sacrifice bunt before swiping third. Kaitlin Brunelli handed the Hawks the lead with a two-run home run to right center, 4-3. Chowan loaded the bases with two-outs but was unable to continue the rally.
Mars Hill rallied in the seventh inning loading the bases with one out. MHU evened the score on a bases-loaded walk before an infield single and an error plated the go-ahead runs.
Serena Riley doubled to left field in the bottom of the seventh as the rally fell short.
Chowan 0, Frostburg State 6
The Hawks looked to take an early advantage as Paige Wilhelm would get thrown out at third trying to stretch her hit to left center into a triple.
Frostburg State posted the opening runs of the contest in the third inning as five hits and two errors led to five runs, three earned in the inning, to lead 5-0. Bailey Wilcox came in and ended the inning with a strikeout.
Bailey Wilcox recorded the next six outs by herself with five strikeouts and a line out. FSU tallied one hit in the sixth inning with a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning to stretch their lead to 6-0. Wilcox picked up three more strikeouts in the inning to end the threat.
Mya Horne picked up a single in the third and Haleigh Reid tallied a single in the fifth but couldn't string any rallies together down the stretch.

Chowan will host Mars Hill and Frostburg State in the final action of the Hawks Softball Classic on Sunday, February 27. First pitch against Frostburg State is scheduled for 10am.
