Hot Shooting Dooms Hawks Against Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team couldn't thwart the hot shooting by Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas contest on Friday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Daylan Askew led the Hawks with 18 points.  Jay Estime chipped in with 17 points, while Donavon Martin scored 13 points.

Chowan went 26-37 from the free throw line.  Belmont Abbey shot 60% from the floor including 68.75% in the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Belmont Abbey opened the scoring on an 11-3 run as Jay Estime connected from deep.  Daylan Askew slowed the run with a triple and a layup, 14-8.

Christian Koonce and RJ Wilson picked up points at the stripe before RJ Wilson connected on a layup.  Jay Estime knocked down a triple as Belmont Abbey pushed their lead to 32-17.  Cheick Traore added a jumper to end the run.

Christian Koonce and Marcus Elliott picked up points at the charity stripe before Daylan Askew knocked down a triple and a layup along with an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to 41-31.

Daylan Askew hit a jumper and Jay Estime knocked down a triple as the Hawks trailed 56-37 at the intermission.

Second Half:

Chase Barnett notched the first points in the half for the Hawks followed by a pair at the stripe by Daylan Askew.  RJ Wilson added a pair from the line as the Crusaders extended their lead to 72-43.

Xavier Young would end the run with a three-point play before Christian Koonce knocked down a triple.  RJ Wilson finished off the and-one prior to baskets by Chase Barnett and Donavon Martin.  Martin finished off the three-point play to cut into the deficit 77-58.

Donavon Martin tallied a layup as Daylan Askew connected from deep and Martin scored on an alley-oop dunk.  Jay Estime scored the next five points for the Hawks prior to Christian Koonce's jumper in the paint.

Donavon Martin scored eight points and Joshua Wilson scored his first collegiate basket for the Hawks to close out the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan heads to Tigerville, S.C. to take on the Crusaders of North Greenville in a crucial Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday, February 19.
