MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The hot first half shooting cold off for the Chowan Men's Basketball team as the Crusaders fought back to hand the Hawks an overtime loss in Conference Carolinas action on Friday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Five players posted double-figures for the Hawks led by Daylen Askew and Christian Koonce with 19 points each. Askew played a career-high 42 minutes.
Jay Estime tallied 18 points, while Chase Barnett added 11 points and Donavon Martin added 10 points in nine minutes. Cheick Traore hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Hawks shot 7-11 (63.6%) from behind the arc in the first half compared to 2-12 (16.7%) in the second half and overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Daylen Askew started the contest with a layup in transition before Jay Estime connected from deep. Belmont Abbey answered with five quick points before Chase Barnett knocked down a jumper. Askew and Estime hit back-to-back triples to give the Hawks a 13-9 advantage.
Daylen Askew connected from deep once again before the Crusaders answered with a 7-0 run to even the score at 16-all. Chase Barnett tallied a pair from the stripe and Christian Koonce added a jumper in the paint. RJ Wilson recorded a jumper and Koonce connected from the stripe to keep the Hawks in front, 24-21.
Jay Estime sparked a run with a four-point play hitting a three-pointer in transition. Donavon Martin and Marcus Elliott scored in transition before Martin picked up a pair at the stripe and Chase Barnett hit a triple to put the Hawks up 37-21.
Donavon Martin posted back-to-back buckets before Christian Koonce handed the Hawks their largest lead of the contest on the three-pointer, 44-26. RJ Wilson posted a jumper as the Hawks maintained their double-digit advantage. Jay Estime tallied a pair from the stripe along with a jumper by Koonce.
The Hawks would lead 51-36 at the halftime buzzer.
Second Half:
Jay Estime came out of the locker room connecting on his first three attempts. Daylen Askew added a jumper as the Crusaders matched the scoring. Marcus Elliott tallied a triple before Askew picked up two from the charity stripe, 64-48.
Belmont Abbey went on an 11-1 run to cut the deficit to single-digits. Donavon Martin tallied a pair from the stripe to slow the run, 67-59.
Chase Barnett and Christian Koonce scored from the floor to put the Hawks up double-digits, but the Crusaders would rally with a quick 6-0 run. Koonce recorded a pair from the stripe and Daylen Askew hit a jumper in transition.
Belmont Abbey continued to chip away at the deficit cutting the Hawks' lead down to three, 80-77, with 2:22 remaining. Cheick Traore recorded a putback layup and a jumper to keep the Hawks in front, 84-79.
The Hawks would miss a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining in regulation and a three-point advantage. Belmont Abbey used ball movement to find a corner trey to even the score at 84-all. Chowan would have their shot blocked on the final possession to go into overtime.
Overtime:
Belmont Abbey controlled the overtime period with a 12-2 run as Daylen Askew scored the lone bucket for the Hawks. Chowan went 2-10 in the overtime period. Christian Koonce knocked down a triple and a pair from the stripe as the Crusaders connected from the stripe to take the victory.

Chowan welcomes Southern Wesleyan to town on Saturday, February 12 in a Conference Carolinas contest. The Hawks will tip-off at 4pm following the women's contest.
