HAWKS HIGHLIGHTS
Chowan was on the short end of a 3-1 loss against UNC Pembroke on Tuesday evening on the road. With 13 new faces, the Hawks are still figuring out how to play together after the opening match of the season.
Freshman, Anixa Rosa-Martinez leads the team with nine kills. Rosa-Martinez also tallied 14 digs. Returner, Sydney Hiner recorded eight kills. Junior transfer, Katie Houston posted 17 digs, while freshman setter, Ciara Ortega dished out 21 assists.
TAMING THE BEARS
Shaw opened the season with four losses in the opening weekend on the road in Florida. The Bears have had turnover in the coaching department the past two seasons welcoming another head coach.
The Bears are experienced with six seniors and two sophomores on the team. Amari Fletcher leads the team with 13 kills as four others have 10-plus kills. Karla Sosa paces the team with 49 digs.
Shaw went 23-9 last season on their way to the 2018 CIAA Championship and an NCAA postseason appearance.
IN THE SERIES
Chowan holds the series advantage 11-4 but the Bears have picked up the last four meetings. Chowan is 4-1 against the Bears at home. This will be the third time the teams have met outside of conference play and first time since Oct. 9, 2008.
