(REVISED TIMES) Hawks Open Up CIAA Play At Round Up

MURFREESBORO, N.C.- The Chowan Volleyball teams opens up CIAA play in the first CIAA Round Up of the season at Virginia State on Saturday and Sunday with four contests.

HAWKS PROFILE

Chowan started the season on the road against three strong South Atlantic Conference opponents.  The Hawks dropped to 0-3 to start the season but will look to rebound in the round-up.

Reigning CIAA Rookie of the Year, Kayla Gates, leads the Hawks with 13 kills.  Sydney Hiner and Milica Vejnovic sit with 12 kills each.  Breona Young has posted 11 kills on the year.  Young also leads the team with 7.0 blocks, while Vejnovic has posted 6.0 blocks.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS

St. Augustine's comes into the contest sporting a 0-3 record.  The Falcons dropped three matches at the Virginia State Tournament last weekend in straight sets.

Brittany James and Mechelle Moss lead the Falcons with 17 and 13 kills respectively.

FAYETTEVILLE STATE FACTS

Fayetteville State opened the season with five straight losses, all in straight sets.  The Broncos faced strong opponents to open the season at the UNC Pembroke Tournament last weekend.

Bojo Jada leads the Broncos with 35 kills on the season.  Chynna Hunt is second on the team with 20 kills and hitting at a .370 clip.  Hunt and Jada lead the team in blocks as well with 9.0 and 7.0 respectively.

THE NEWCOMER-CLAFIN

Claflin, the newest member of the CIAA, opened their season with two losses against Paine (3-2) and Allen (3-0) on Monday.

Jasmine Dobson paces the Panthers with 15 kills.  Kiana Ware has posted six service aces through two matches.

THE BEARS BIO

Shaw, preseason CIAA frontrunner, enters the round-up with a 2-6 overall record.  The Bears started out the season with four straight losses before winning two of four at the UNC Pembroke tournament.

Saraya Klink and Keveesha Wattley lead the Bears with 71 kills each.  Klink paces the team with a .350 hitting percentage.  Senior setter, Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez, has posted 166 assists so far this season.

SERIES HISTORY

Chowan is 23-2 all-time against St. Augustine's including the past 14 meetings.  Fayetteville State and Shaw have been the rivals for the Hawks in Volleyball as Chowan holds a 12-7 advantage against the Broncos and an 11-3 mark against the Bears.  But the Broncos have won the past two meetings and the Bears have posted three straight wins against the Hawks.

The Hawks and Claflin will meet for the eighth time in the series with Chowan leading 5-2.  The Hawks have won the past five meetings.  This meeting will be the first time since 2016 when the Hawks took both meetings that season.
