MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University women's tennis team clinched a CIAA conference match victory on Saturday afternoon with a 8-1 win over Shaw University.  The Hawks improve to 10-7 on the season with the win and remain undefeated with 5-0 in league play.  The Lady Bears slide to 9-2 on the year and take their first conference loss with 5-1 against CIAA competition.

In doubles play, the Hawks grabbed all three doubles matches over Shaw.  At the number one position, Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova fought for a 8-5 win over Daniela Vako and Marilyne Kamegne. Cynthia Carrier and Angelique Gouin also won 8-5 in the second doubles match over Teodora Jovanovic and Helena Fekete while, Roxana Daneshjoo and Anna Makhneva picked up a 8-6 victory in the number three position over Simbiat Aleem and Andrijana Martic.

Heading into singles play, Novachuk won the number one singles match 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 over Vanko, while Smolchenkova took the number two singles play win 6-3, 6-2 over Jovanovic. Shaw's Kamegne dropped the third singles position 6-2, 6-1 to Carrier before Gouin picked up the number four singles 6-2, 6-1 over Martic. Chowan's Makhneva secured the fifth singles play with a tie breaker 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Aleem. The Lady Bears grabbed their lone win in the number sixth singles match when Fekete defeated Franca Pacelli 6-3, 6-1.

The Hawks will continue play in the CIAA Round Up on Sunday, March 26^th. Chowan will match up against Fayetteville State University at 1:00pm.
