Chowan will be inducting five into the Hall of Fame for the 2017 season. Inductees include: Tommy Forbes, Wilbert Hunter, Andy Kelly, Judy Parsons, and Julius Smith.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Chowan will play in their final home game of the season. The Hawks are 2-1 inside Garrison Stadium picking up wins against Livingstone and Elizabeth City.
The Hawks are comfortable playing at Garrison Stadium this season limiting opposing offenses to 317 total yards. Chowan counters that with 435 total yards.
NATIONALLY RANKED/REGIONALLY RANKED
Chowan will meet their second nationally ranked opponent in Virginia State and their third regionally ranked opponent. Virginia State tops the polls at #17, while Bowie State was #23 in the contest. Both Virginia State and Bowie State are regionally ranked, while Virginia Union adds to the mix.
WORK HORSES
Tyrell Freeman and Michael Offutt Jr. have posted five 100-yd rushing games this season with Freeman notching his third last week. Freeman rattled off 139 yards on 16 carries against Elizabeth City. The sophomore broke off a 74-yd touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. The run was the second longest rush in program history.
Tyrell Freeman leads the team with 597 yards rushing and averages 85.3 yards per game. Michael Offutt Jr. has produced 438 yards and 62.6 yards per game.
Freeman averages 152.5 yards at home on the ground with a 8.2 yards per carry, while Offutt Jr. averages 93.5 yards per game at home with 7.5 yards per carry.
VIRGINIA STATE FILES
Virginia State comes into the match-up with an unblemished 7-0 record and 5-0 in CIAA play. The Trojans are #17 in the nation and ranked in the region as well.
The Trojans are second in the CIAA in points per game with 46.1 points. VSU is led by senior running back, Trenton Cannon. Cannon is closing in on the VSU all-time rushing record racking up 1,116 rushing yards this season.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Chowan and Virginia State will meet for the eighth time in the series. The Trojans hold the series lead 6-1 with their lone loss in the series coming in 2012 in Virginia.
