Box Score TIGERVILLE, SC- The Chowan University volleyball fell to North Greenville University 3-2 on the road on Thursday evening. The Hawks move to 2-4 on the season with the loss while the Crusaders remain perfect with a 5-0 mark on the year.
The Hawks grabbed the opening set 25-22, fell 25-23 in set two and recovered to take set three 25-23. The Crusaders captured a 25-16 victory in set four and rallied from an early deficit to earn a 15-11 win.
Suraya Chase paced the Hawks with 15 kills in the loss followed by
Morgan Spencer with 14 kills.
Bailey Zavala recorded 30 digs for the Chowan Blue and White with Chase notching 15 digs.
Karisa Patterson added 15 digs for the Hawks.
Samantha Hebb led all players in the contest with 21 kills. Kenzie Pierce and Courtney Adams added 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Taylor Waters hauled in 28 digs to aid the effort for North Greenville.
Chowan and North Greenville battled early in the contest with neither team able to establish a significant lead or advantage. The Hawks trailed 20-18 late in the first set before a kill by Chase led to a 3-0 run, handing Chowan a 21-20 edge. North Greenville responded with a kill by Madison Pogue but a kill by
Caitlin Turner on the next play propelled the Hawks to the 25-22 set win.
Set two proved to be a fierce battle for both teams. With the score knotted 22-22, a kill by Pierce shifted the momentum in favor of the Crusaders. North Greenville held the Hawks at-bay for the remainder of the set to earn the narrow 25-23 win.
In set three, Chowan ran away with the momentum midway through the set. With the score tied 14-14, a trio of attack errors by North Greenville pushed the Hawks ahead 17-14. Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-23 win on a kill by Chase.
Chowan pulled away in set four and held a 14-11 lead midway through the set before a 6-0 run left the Hawks trailing 17-14. Kills by
Sydney Miller and Spencer put Chowan back within striking distance but North Greenville promptly answered with an 8-0 run to earn the 25-16 win.
After trailing 7-3 early in set five, North Greenville fought back to regain the momentum. With the score tied 11-11, the Crusaders rattled off four straight points, resulting in the 15-11 set win and 3-2 match victory.
Chowan faces a quick turnaround as the Hawks prepare to take on Coker College and Converse College on Friday. Match times are slated for 3pm and 5pm, respectively.
