Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Chowan University volleyball team picked up their first season win after splitting second day play at the Winston-Salem State University Spike Out Hunger Challenge. The Hawks dropped a close 3-1 match up to Mount Olive to open the day but bounced back with an exciting five-set thriller over Kutztown University.
Mount Olive took the first two sets of the day's first match 25-19 and 25-19 before the Hawks answered. They clawed out a 26-24 third set win but dropped the fourth set 25-19 for their third straight loss. CU's
Suraya Chase tallied 15 kills, nine digs, four service aces, and three blocks in the match.
Morgan Spencer,
Caitlin Turner, and
Courtney O'Keefe each tallied seven kills in the loss.
Bailey Zavala had 13 digs while
Karisa Patterson set up 22 assists.
The Hawks bounced back in their second and final match of the Challenge after beating Kutztown 3-2. Chowan dropped the first two sets of the match (25-12 and 25-23) but went on to win the last three sets in thrilling style for the win (25-18, 25-21, and 15-13).
Chase tallied five kills in the fifth and final set to help propel the Hawks to victory. She tallied a team-high 19 kills and 10 digs in the win. Spencer also had a stellar fifth set with three kills in the final set. She had 11 kills in the match. Patterson set up 22 assists while
Alyssa Born had 17 assists.
The Hawks, now 1-3, will travel over to play Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina on Tuesday, September 6
th, in their next outing.
