MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's tennis team picked up two CIAA wins on Wednesday.  The Hawks defeated CIAA Northern Division foe Virginia State University 6-3 before blanking Fayetteville State University 9-0.  Chowan University improves to 18-5 overall and 10-0 in CIAA play with the victories. 

In Chowan's opening match, Anna Makhneva/Roxana Daneshjoo picked up a default win in the number three doubles position while Cynthia Carrier/Angelique Gouin defeated Tamisha Richardson/Majhanae Thomas 8-3 in the number two spot.  Polina Novachuk/Victoria Smolchenkova battled through tiebreaker play before falling 9-8 (5-0) to Sydney Yao/Sheila James in number one doubles play. 

Holding a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play, the Hawks built on the momentum as Carrier, Gouin, Jessica De Backre, and Makhneva earned wins in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth singles positions, respectively.  The Trojans earned wins by forfeit in number one and two singles play, but the Hawks earned the 6-3 victory. 

In the second match of the day, the Hawks rolled past the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville City State.  Carrier/Gouin earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in number one doubles play while Makhneva/Daneshjoo and De Backre/Andrade picked up 6-0, 6-0 victories in number two and three doubles, respectively. 

Each Hawk in the lineup notched a win in singles play to secure the 9-0 win for Chowan.  The Hawks return to action on Thursday as Chowan plays host to Virginia Union University.  First serve is slated for 1:00pm.
