HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC - The Chowan University women's tennis team extended their win streak to seven on Wednesday afternoon, handing Ashland University a 7-2 loss.  The Hawks improve to 10-1 with the victory while the Eagles slip to 4-14 with the loss.
 
In the first match to be completed, Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova picked up a win for Chowan, defeating Martina Baca and Meghann Fitzpatrick 8-2 at the number one doubles position.  Next, Cynthia Carrier and Angelique Gouin downed their opponents 8-3 in the number two spot, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Roxana Daneshjoo and Anna Makhneva then fell to Zdenka Pozo and Daniela Alves 9-7 in the number three position, putting Chowan at 2-1 heading into singles.
 
At the number three singles spot, Carrier defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1, while Natalia Andrade had a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kaitlin Snider at number six singles. With a 4-1 lead for the Hawks, Jessica De Backre handed her opponent a 6-2, 6-0 loss at the number five singles position, clinching the win for the Hawks. At number one singles, Novachuk topped Baca 6-4, 6-0 for a win. Smolchenkova then picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fitzpatrick, while Gouin dropped a one set 7-6 (10-4) decision to her opponent making the final score 7-2 in favor of Chowan.
 
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they compete against regional opponent, Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
