MOUNT OLIVE, NC - Chowan University women's tennis team had little trouble downing the University of Mount Olive 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. The win marks the first time in program history that Chowan defeated the Trojans. The Hawks improve to a 5-1 record on the year after the win. The Trojans' record drops to 2-4 with the loss.
Polina Novachuk and
Victoria Smolchenkova paired up to win at the number one doubles position. After being down 1-5 they fought back for an 8-6 win over Stella Di Michelle and Alejandra Hernandez.
Cynthia Carrier and
Angelique Gouin lost a very close match in a tiebreaker at the number two position. They fell to Mount Olive's Paulina Delgado and Jennifer Byrd 8-7(6). At the number three position,
Roxana Daneshjoo and
Anna Makhneva downed Mariana Gamboa and Nicole La Chappelle 8-2.
With a 2-1 lead going into singles play Chowan's Novachuk handed Mount Olive's Hernandez a three-set loss. Novachuk won 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, at the number one singles position. Smolchenkova won over Mount Olive's Delgado 6-2, 6-1 at the number two position while
Cynthia Carrier defeated Gamboa 6-2, 6-0 at the number three spot. Gouin beat La Chappelle at the number four spot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Jessica De Backre lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision at the number five position while
Natalia Andrade downed Emma Burroughs 6-1, 6-2 at the number six singles position.
The Hawks return to action on March 6
th when they travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to take on Johnson C. Smith College at 9:00am and Livingstone College at 1:00pm in the first CIAA Round Up of the season.Â
