WILSON, NC- The Chowan University women's tennis team upended Barton College 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 2-0 with the victory while the Bulldogs drop to a 0-2 record.
Chowan's number one doubles team,
Polina Novachuk and
Victoria Smolchenkova, dropped a narrow 8-6 decision to Simljana Kljajic and Vanessa Sanoja while the duo of
Cynthia Carrier and
Angelique Gouin downed Dana Kelly and Whitney Hamilton 8-1. Partners,
Jessica De Backre and
Anna Makhneva, also grabbed an 8-1 victory over Casey Utley and Rebecca Lamm, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
The Hawks dominated in singles competition, sweeping the Bulldogs in every position. Novachuk topped Kljajic 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the number one position while Smolchenkova defeated Sanoja 3-6, 7-5, 10-1 in the number two spot. In the third position, Carrier toppled Kelly 6-1, 6-1 and Gouin handed Hamilton a 6-0, 6-0 loss, clinching the match for the Hawks. De Backre defeated Utley 6-0, 6-0 while
Natalia Andrade defeated Lamm 6-3, 6-0.
Chowan returns to action on February 12
th when the Hawks travel to Mount Olive, NC to take on the University of Mount Olive. Match time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
