WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV - The Chowan University women's tennis team fell to West Virginia State University 7-2 on Saturday afternoon. West Virginia State came into the match ranked 46th nationally in Division II. The Hawks move to 3-1 on the season with the loss while the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-0.
Cynthia Carrier and
Angelique Gouin earned the lone doubles win for Chowan. Playing at the number two position, the duo topped Nina Dillwald and Kayla McKnight 8-4.
Polina Novachuk and
Victoria Smolchenkova dropped an 8-2 decision to Brittany Franco and Laura Isbey in the number one spot while
Natalia Andrade and
Roxana Daneshjoo were defeated 8-1 in the third position by Diana Cotoros and Brenda Cumpa.
In singles play,
Jessica De Backre came back from a first set loss at the number five position to take the match 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 over McKnight, earning the lone singles win for the Blue and White. Franco defeated Novachuk in the number one position 7-6(2), 6-2 while Isbey toppled Smolchenkova 6-3, 6-0 in the number two singles position. Carrier lost a three set match 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 to West Virginia State's Dillwald at number three while Chowan's Gouin dropped a close match in a super tiebreaker at the number four spot with a final score of 6-3, 4-6 (10-6) against Charlotte Sandy. Rounding out the scoring, at the number six singles position
Anna Makhneva fell to Cumpa 6-2, 6-3.
The Hawks return to action on February 28th when they take on Bluefield State College in Blacksburg, Virginia.
