MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University women's tennis team advanced to an overall 3-0 record on the season after downing Meredith College in a non-conference match on Monday afternoon. The Hawks clipped the Avenging Angels 7-2 after winning two out of three doubles matches and five singles matches. Meredith College falls to a 0-2 record after the match.
The number one doubles team of
Polina Novachuk and
Victoria Smolchenkova  dropped a close 8-6 decision to Ran Zhang and Catherine Bryant.
Cynthia Carrier and
Angelique Gouin defeated Jacqueline Benton and Laura Anne Hatcher 8-1 in the number two doubles match and Chowan's
Natalia Andrade and
Roxana Daneshjoo picked up an 8-3 win over Cailin Goff and Kate DeSilva at the number three doubles position.
Heading into singles with a 2-1 lead, Chowan's
Jessica De Backre downed DeSilva 6-2, 6-2 at the number five singles position while
Anna Makhneva took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Benton at the number six singles position to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead. The clinching match came at the number four singles position with Gouin defeating Hatcher 6-0, 6-3. Novachuk won at the number one singles position 6-3, 7-5 over Bryant while Carrier picked up a win at the number three position defeating Goff 7-6 (5), 6-3. Chowan's Smolchenkova fell to Meredith's Zhang at the number two singles match, 6-2, 7-6(7).
The Hawks will hit the court again on Saturday, February 27
th when they travel to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia to take on West Virginia State. Match time is set for 3:00pm at The Greenbrier .
