Rams Edge Chowan in CIAA Crossover Battle

Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team saw a five-match win streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon after falling to Winston-Salem State University 3-2 in the final day of play at the CIAA Round-Up.  The Hawks move to 10-7 on the season with the setback and  7-2 in CIAA play.  The Rams post an 11-5 overall mark on the year and stand 7-1 in league play with the victory. 

The Rams picked up a 25-18 win in set one and fought back late in set two to pick up a 25-23 victory.  Chowan recovered for 25-16 and 25-20 victories in sets three and four, respectively.  Winston-Salem State had the last word, as the Rams topped the Hawks 16-14 in a thrilling fifth set to earn the 3-2 match win. 

Suraya Chase led all players in the match with 19 kills in the loss.  Caitlin Turner and Morgan Spencer notched 12 kills and 10 kills, respectively.  Turner handed out 26 assists over the course of five sets while Karisa Patterson added 25 assists in the setback.  Bailey Zavala tallied 31 digs for Chowan.

Mia Herrod led the effort for the Rams with 13 kills in the win.  Jocelyn Mills recorded 11 kills with Jasmine Smith notching 19 assists.  Mikayla Lytton hauled in 31 digs. 
In the opening set, the Rams jumped to a quick 4-0 lead to grab the momentum early in the contest. Chowan fought back to stay close on Winston-Salem State's heels but were not able to overcome the early deficit.  The Hawks trailed by as many as eight points (19-11) before falling 25-18 in set one after a kill by Teynia Shepherd.

Chowan fought back in set two, racing to a 6-2 advantage at the start.  The Hawks held the Rams at-bay, maintaining a narrow lead until a late rally by Winston-Salem State shifted the momentum.  Chowan clung to a 22-19 lead before a 5-0 run by the Rams left the Hawks trailing 24-22.   A kill by Sydney Miller put the Hawks back in the mix, but a kill by Christa Brown for the Rams secured the 25-23 set two win for Winston-Sale State. 

Down but not out, Chowan fought back in over the course of the next two sets.  The Hawks quickly established a commanding 12-4 lead in set three and never looked back.  Winston-Salem pulled within four points (15-11) after a kill by Mills, but a 4-0 run by Chowan put the set out of reach.  A kill by Chase at the conclusion of set three solidified a 25-16 win for the Hawks.

Chowan took advantage of a series of runs early in set four to jump to a 13-4 lead.  Winston-Salem State clawed their way back to pull within four points (18-14) down the final stretch, but the Hawks held on to claim a 25-20 victory, knotting the match score 2-2. 

The fifth set featured a fierce battle down to the final point.  With the score tied 12-12, two Hawk errors allowed the Rams to pull away 14-12.  Back-to-back kills by Spencer knotted the score 14-14, but a pair of kills by Brown allowed Winston-Salem State to earn the 16-14 win. 

Chowan returns to action on October 6th as the Hawks travel to take on Virginia State University.  First serve is slated for 6pm.
