Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team opened CIAA Northern Division play with a 3-0 win over Elizabeth City State University on Thursday evening. The Hawks improve to 5-3 on the season and 4-0 in league play while the Lady Vikings slip to 0-7 overall and 0-4 against CIAA competition.
The Hawks made quick work of the Lady Vikings. Chowan topped Elizabeth City State 25-14 in the first set, 25-7 in the second set and 25-20 in set three.
Suraya Chase and
Morgan Spencer each tallied a team-high eight kills in the contest followed by
Ashley Tutherow with seven kills.
Brittany Tschida,
Michelle Seiler and
Brianna Smith each accounted for four kills in the victory.
Lindsey Denne and
Becca Page both handed out 12 assists while Chase and
Cindy Ehrich dished out 11 and 10 digs respectively.
Emmesha White led the effort for the Lady Vikings with eight kills in the setback while Jasmine Arthur and Chelsey Elliott added three kills apiece. Lauren Burgess had 12 kills for Elizabeth City State while Krystal Sawyer added 12 digs.
The Hawks grabbed a quick 3-0 lead early in the first set before the Lady Vikings got on the board with back-to-back kills. An Elizabeth City State attack error, kill by Smith and service ace by Tschida pushed Chowan ahead 6-2. Elizabeth City State remained within striking distance until midway through the first set. With the Hawks holding a 14-9 lead, Chowan rattled off four straight points using Lady Viking attack errors to take an 18-9 lead. The Hawks secured the 25-14 win in set one with a kill by Spencer.
Chowan grabbed a quick 4-0 lead in the second set before the Lady Vikings on the board with a kill by White. The Hawks used back-to-back kills by Seiler along one from Tutherow and one from Smith to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The Lady Vikings were unable to recover from the early deficit, resulting in a 25-7 win for the Chowan Blue and White.
The Hawks used a service error to earn the first point of the third set before the Lady Vikings answered with a 5-0 run for their first advantage of the match. The Hawks chipped away at the deficit to come back and earn the victory. Trailing 8-4, Chowan regrouped for an 8-0 run to pull away 12-8. Elizabeth City State pulled within two points midway through the set (13-11) before a Lady Viking service error sparked a 4-0 run for the Hawks. Chowan held onto the momentum for the remainder of the contest and confirmed the 25-20 win with a kill by Seiler.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, September 26
th when they take on Southern Virginia University in their first home match of the season. First serve is slated for 1:00pm in the Helms Center. Chowan then hosts Bowie State University on September 27
th and The Lincoln University on September 28
th in CIAA Northern Division play.
