Box Score BUIES CREEK, NC- The Chowan University football team suffered a 35-3 loss to Campbell University on Saturday evening. The Hawks even their record 1-1 after the setback while the Camels advance to 2-0 on the short season with the victory.
Campbell rolled to victory with 450 yards of total offense while holding Chowan to a total of 135 offensive yards over the course of the contest. The Camels tallied 242 yards in the air and 208 yards on the ground while the Hawks totaled 127 yards passing and just eight net rushing yards.
Randall Dixon completed 11-22 pass attempts for 127 yards. He connected with
Damian Ellis four times for 60 yards,
Kaine Lombard twice for 33 yards and
Tyree Lee four times for 27 yards. Lee also had 15 carries totaling 46 yards.
Kameron Bryant completed 17-25 pass attempts for 196 yards and two scores. David Salmon entered the contest and was a perfect 3-3 in pass attempts totaling 46 yards with two touchdowns. DeShawn Jones led all players in the contest with 21 carries for 97 yards, followed by Bryant with nine carries totaling 55 yards.
Defensively,
Roderick Lindsey paced the Hawks with nine tackles (five solo, four assisted) and three breakups while
Cornell Duncan added eight tackles (four solo, four assisted).
Kenny Watt,
Andrew Denny and
Anthony Joffrion each totaled seven tackles for Chowan in the setback.
Randy Allen Jr. hauled in one interception for the Hawks (34 yards) while
Demetrius Newberry provided the Hawks with a spark late in the game thanks to a forced fumble and recovery (49 yards).
Carlos Merritt and Jack Ryan led Campbell with six stops apiece while Greg Milhouse and Daniel Bostick added five tackles each to aid the effort. The Camels' defense was responsible for six sacks totaling 66 yards.
After surrendering 28 unanswered points in the first half, the Hawks battled back in the third and fourth quarters to hold the Camels at-bay.
Campbell's first possession of the game ended with Bryant's 18-yard touchdown pass to Ben Bolling, followed by Jarret Ozimek's made point after attempt to give the Camels a quick 7-0 advantage.
Late in the first quarter, Merritt's interception led to a 12 play, 65 yard touchdown drive for the Camels. Bryant concluded the drive with a 17 yard touchdown pass to Aaron Blockmon. Ozimek's point after pushed Campbell ahead 14-0.
Salmon connected with Ricky Brown on an eight yard touchdown pass with 12:18 on the clock in the second quarter and later found Damon Simmons on a 19 yard pass at the 5:22 mark to leave the Hawks trailing 28-0 heading into halftime.
Newberry's fumble recovery at the end of the third quarter shifted the momentum and put the Hawks within field goal distance with 13:52 remaining in the game.
Nick Hahula made good on the 27-yard field goal attempt to put the Hawks on the board.
Chowan's defense held-off Campbell until the final 19 seconds of the contest when Angelo Crawford-Reid rushed for 21 yards, capping a 10 play, 82 yard drive for the Camels. Ozimek made good on the point after attempt to solidify the 35-3 victory for the Camels.
The Hawks conclude a three week road trip next Saturday as they travel to take on Delaware State University. Kick-off is slated for 2:00pm.
