Hawks Upend Virginia State

Natalya Kamenshchikova earned a win in singles and doubles play on Wednesday.

MURFREESBORO, NC - The Chowan University women's tennis team earned their eleventh straight CIAA victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 win over Virginia State University. The Hawks advance to 16-6 overall and 11-0 in the conference with the win while the Lady Trojans move to 7-4 overall and 6-3 against CIAA competition after the setback.

Doubles duos Natalya Kamenshchikova/Victoria Smolchenkova and Polina Novachuk /Jessica De Backre earned 8-4 and 8-2 victories in the number one and two doubles positions, respectively. Straffai Cleveland and Jennifer Humphrey dropped a hard fought 8-5 decision in the number three position.

In singles play, the Hawks picked up five victories to secure the 7-2 win. In the number one position, Kamenshchikova defeated Zaire Simmons 6-1, 6-0. The Hawks dropped a match at the number two position with Novachuk falling to Monet Graves 6-2, 6-3. In the third position, Smolchenkova handed Nakesha Harry a 6-2, 6-0 loss, while Natalia Andrade earned a 6-1, 6-2 win against Majhanae Thomas in the number five spot. The deciding match came at the number four position with De Backre overcoming Sharmane Tonkins with a 6-3, 6-1 win. The Hawks' final singles victory was earned by Cleveland with a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Tamisha Richardson in the sixth position.

The Hawks return to action on April 9^th when they host Virginia Union University. Match time is set for 1:00pm.
