BOWIE, MD - The Chowan University women's tennis team clinched their second consecutive CIAA Northern Division title on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Bowie State University. The Hawks improve to 17-6 on the year and remain perfect in CIAA play with a 13-0 record after Saturday's victory. The Lady Bulldogs slip to 6-8 on the year and 6-7 against CIAA competition with the setback.
In doubles competition, the team of
Natalya Kamenshchikova and
Victoria Smolchenkova toppled Amber Peters and Dainese Smothers 8-2 in the number one doubles position. Duos
Polina Novachuk and
Jessica De Backre and
Jennifer Humphrey and
Natalia Andrade both defeated their opponents with an 8-1 score in the number two and three doubles positions, respectively.
In singles play, Kamenshchikova breezed through the match in the number one position defeating Peters 6-0, 6-0. At the number two position, Novachuk had a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Smothers, while Smolchenkova earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Antonique Johnson in the number three spot. De Backre handed Channae Manning a 6-3, 6-1 loss in the fourth spot. Andrade topped Rahwa Hamtemariam 6-0, 6-0 while Humphrey earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the sixth position.
The Hawks will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina on April 16
th to compete in the CIAA Championship.
