ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University women's tennis team earned two shutout wins over Elizabeth City State University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks advance to 14-5 overall and 10-0 in CIAA play while the Lady Vikings begin their season with a 0-2 overall record and 0-2 mark in the league. Chowan earned a 9-0 win in the opening match of the day and held a 6-0 lead after singles play in the second match, resulting in a 6-0 win for the Hawks in match two.
The Hawks rolled through doubles and singles play in Saturday's first match and earned shutout wins in every position.
In Saturday's first match,
Natalya Kamenshchikova and
Polina Novachuk teamed up for an 8-0 victory against Chalise Greenwood and Jamilia Foster in the number one position.
Jessica De Backre and
Victoria Smolchenkova blanked Brendai Perry and Cache Nance 8-0 in the number two spot while
Natalia Andrade and
Jennifer Humphrey defeated Melissa Reid and Avery Givens in the third position.
Kamenshchikova, Novachuk, Smolchenkova, Andrade, De Backre and Humphrey continued the momentum into singles play and earned 8-0 wins over their opponents in their respective positions. Chowan grabbed six quick victories in singles play with the same lineup to earn a 6-0 victory in the second match. The Lady Vikings trailed by too many to overcome the deficit, resulting in the abbreviated match.
Chowan returns to action on April 6
th when the Hawks travel to Norfolk State University for a 3:00pm match.
