MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's tennis team earned a 7-2 win over Barton College on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 2-0 with the victory while the Bulldogs start the year with an 0-1 record.
Chowan's number one doubles team,
Natalya Kamenshchikova and
Victoria Smolchenkova dropped a narrow 9-7 decision while
Polina Novachuk and
Natalia Andrade fell 8-6 in a tight match in the number two spot.
Jessica De Backre and
Jennifer Humphrey earned a doubles win in the third spot by forfeit, leaving the Hawks trailing 2-1 heading into singles play.
The Hawks went to work in singles competition, sweeping the Bulldogs in every position. Kamenshchikova topped Simljana Kljajic 6-2, 6-4 in the number one position while Smolchenkova defeated Alicia Lasry 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 in the number two spot. In the third position, Novachuk toppled Meredith Pruden 6-0, 6-2 and De Backre handled Dana Kelly 6-2, 6-2. Andrade defeated Casey Utley 6-1, 6-0 while Humphrey picked up a win by forfeit in the sixth position to secure the 7-2 win for the Blue and White.
Chowan returns to action on Saturday when the Hawks host UNC-Pembroke. First serve is slated for 1:00pm.
