RALEIGH, NC - The Chowan University women's tennis team ran their overall record to 3-1 on the year after downing Meredith College in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks clipped the Angels 5-3 after winning two out of three doubles matches and three matches on the singles side. Meredith College fell to 1-2 on the year after the match.
Natalya Kamenshchikova dropped the #1 seeded match to Ran Zhang. Kamenshchikova took the first set 6-2 but Zhang battled back to take the last two sets, 6-3 and 6-2. The loss was the first singles match loss for Kamenshchikova this season. CU's
Victoria Smolchenkova handled Meredith's Catherine Bryant at the #2 seeded match, 6-3 and 6-3.
Polina Novachuk blanked Meredith's Caroline Hunt 6-0, 6-0 at the #3 seeded singles match and
Straffai Cleveland won the #6 seeded singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Meredith's Jacqueline Benton. CU's
Jessica De Backre dropped the #4 seeded singles match to Caitlin Goff in a battle. De Backre took the first set easily at 6-1 but dropped the second set 6-3. Goff ultimately held on to take the final set 10-8 for the match win.
Kamenshchikova and Smolchenkova paired up to take the top seeded doubles match 8-2 over Zhang and Bryant. Meredith took the #2 seeded doubles match and CU's Cleveland and De Backre picked up an 8-2 win in the #3 seeded doubles match.
Chowan's match with North Carolina A & T for Thursday, February 26th has been postponed due to poor weather. The Hawks will hit the court again on Sunday, March 1st. Match time is set for 1:00pm at the CU Tennis Complex.
