Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team secured a spot in the CIAA Semi-Final match on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Livingstone College. The Hawks advance with an 18-7 overall record while the Lady Blue Bears end their season 9-16 on the year.
Chowan clipped Livingstone 25-22 in the opening set, defeated the Lady Blue Bears 25-11 in set two and earned a 25-18 win the third set to secure the win.
Suraya Chase led all players in the contest with 12 kills in the match.
Ashley Tutherow added 10 kills for the Chowan Blue and White while
Becca Page and
Lindsey Denne dished out 18 assists and 15 assists, respectively. Chase and Page grabbed a team-high seven digs while
Alyssa Born and
Cindy Ehrich each grabbed six digs in the victory.
Jeskisha Rhymes paced Livingstone with nine kills followed by Lareecia Swiney who notched six kills in the setback. Stevee Cotton handed out 18 assists while Rukiya Garland grabbed 10 digs to aid the effort.
The Hawks and Lady Blue Bears battled early in the first set. With the score tied 6-6, a kill by Chase sparked a 5-0 run for Chowan, leaving Livingstone trailing 11-6. The Hawks refused to back down though the Lady Blue Bears stayed close on their heels. Clinging to a 23-22 advantage, a kill by Tutherow followed by a kill by
Morgan Spencer secured the 25-22 set one victory for the Hawks.
In the second set, the Hawks quickly built an 8-3 advantage to grab the early momentum. Chowan never surrendered the advantage and held a lead of five or more points for the remainder of the set. Tutherow's kill secured the 25-11 victory for the Hawks in set two.
The third set featured an early battle for momentum and control. With the score tied 5-5, three errors by the Lady Blue Bears pushed Chowan ahead 8-5. Livingstone refused to go away quietly and remained within striking distance (14-11) at the midway point. Maintaining an 18-15 advantage, two Livingstone errors and a service ace handed the Hawks a 21-15 lead. Chowan closed out the 25-18 victory using a kill by
Brianna Smith.
The Hawks will take on the winner of Friday's Virginia Union University and Shaw University quarterfinal match on Saturday at 3:00pm.
