Hawks Clinch CIAA Northern Division Title with 3-0 Win over Virginia Union

Box Score RICHMOND, VA- The Chowan University volleyball team secured the CIAA Northern Division title on Friday evening with a 3-0 win over Virginia Union University.  The Hawks earned the honor for the second consecutive season and for the sixth time since joining the CIAA in 2009.  Chowan concludes the regular season with a 17-7 overall record, 14-2 mark in CIAA play and 9-1 finish in CIAA Northern Division play.

Chowan defeated the Lady Panthers 25-19 in the first set, edged Virginia Union 29-27 in set two, and secured the victory with a 25-17 win in the third set. 

Ashley Tutherow and Suraya Chase paced the Hawks with nine kills in the contest.  Chase also tallied 15 digs.  Morgan Spencer followed with seven kills and 11 digs while Cindy Ehrich grabbed 14 digs for the Chowan Blue and White.  Becca Page and Lindsey Denne notched 16 and 11 assists, respectively. 

Fernanda Faustino led all players in the contest with 11 kills for the Lady Panthers.  Esha Atkins notched 26 assists while Natalia Gascot hauled in 16 digs. 
With the scored tied 7-7 in the first set, two errors by the Lady Panthers allowed the Hawks to pull away 9-7.  Chowan held onto the advantage for the duration of the set, leading by as many as seven points (21-14) before securing the 25-19 win thanks to a Virginia Union error. 

Set two was an intense battle for control and momentum as neither team managed to gain a commanding advantage. The Hawks and Lady Panthers battled late in the set, but ultimately, Chowan emerged victorious.  With the scored tied 27-27, a kill by Spencer and Virginia Union attack error confirmed the 29-27 win for the Hawks. 

The Lady Panthers jumped to a quick 8-5 lead at the start of the third set before the Hawks responded with a 12-7 run to pull away 20-12.  A kill by Chase solidified the 25-17 set three victory for the Chowan Blue and White.

The Hawks travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina on November 20th to compete in the CIAA Championship.  Chowan will be the top seed from the CIAA Northern Division.  The championship bracket and additional details will be released as they become available.
