Winston-Salem State Downs Chowan, Hands Hawks First CIAA Loss of the Season

Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University volleyball team suffered their first CIAA loss of the season on Sunday afternoon in a 3-1 decision against Winston-Salem State University.  The Hawks move to 16-6 overall on the season and post a 13-1 mark in league play after the setback.  The Lady Rams improve to 16-6 overall and 12-1 against CIAA competition.

The Lady Rams took set one 25-22 before the Hawks recovered to earn a 25-17 victory in the second set.  Winston-Salem State edged Chowan 25-23 in set three and 25-22 in set four to earn the 3-1 victory. 

Jocelyn Mills and Olivia Owens paced the Lady Rams with 12 kills each while Teynia Sheperd chipped in 10 kills.  Zipporah Foster handed out 16 assists while Michelle Murray-Garica tallied 21 digs.

Suraya Chase led all players in the contest with 15 kills while Morgan Spencer and Ashley Tutherow notched 12 kills apiece.  Lindsey Denne handed out 25 assists while Becca Page dished out 12.  Cindy Ehrich hauled in 18 digs followed by Alyssa Born with 13 and Chase, who added 10 digs.

Winston-Salem State and Chowan exchanged points early in set one with neither team able to maintain a lead of more than two points.  With the Hawks holding a narrow 11-10 advantage, the Lady Rams rattled off four straight points to take a 14-11 lead.  Winston-Salem State maintained the lead for the remainder of the set and confirmed the 25-22 win behind Foster's service ace. 

In the second set, with the score tied 11-11, kills from Brianna Smith, Chase and Spencer gave the Hawks a 14-11 lead.  The Hawks held on to the momentum down the final stretch of the set.  Holding a 20-17 lead, the Hawks used three kills and two Lady Ram errors to secure a 25-17 victory in set two. 

Winston-Salem State jumped out to a quick 15-5 lead in the third set.  The Hawks rallied to tie the set 21-21 after a Lady Ram error.  With the score tied 23-23, a kill by Mills and a Chowan attack error resulted in the 25-23 win for Winston-Salem State.  

The fourth set featured another battle for control and momentum.  With the score tied 18-18, Winston-Salem used two kills and a Hawk error to pull away 21-18.  The Lady Rams held onto the advantage through the reminder of the set and secured the 25-22 win with a kill by Christa Brown. 

Chowan returns to action on November 9th when they travel to Virginia State University to take on the Lady Trojans in CIAA Northern play.  First serve is slated for 6:00pm.
