Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University football team fell 32-28 to the visiting Trojans of Virginia State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks move to 5-4 overall and even their conference record to 3-3 on the season while the Trojans improve to 6-3 on the year and advance to 4-2 in league play.
Virginia State tallied 427 offensive yards in the win while holding the Hawks to 339 offensive yards.
Tyree Lee paced the Hawks with 25 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown. He also hauled in six passes for 24 yards.
Kaine Lombard and
Anthony Prince each notched five receptions on the evening and scored one touchdown each. Lombard had 106 receiving yards in the loss while Prince notched 51.
Demetrius Newberry tallied a team-high nine tackles while
Nate Wyche added seven tackles (six solo, one assisted).
Jairus Cook grabbed two interceptions in the setback.
Jordan Watkins completed 21 of 29 pass attempts for 202 yards with two touchdown passes in the contest. He also tallied 10 carries for 23 yards with one touchdown.
Trenton Cannon led the effort for Virginia State with 13 carries totaling 105 yards. Kavon Bellamy followed with 18 carries for 97 yards. Both scored one touchdown for the Trojans in the victory. Tarian Ayres completed 11 of 22 pass attempts for 139 yards and had nine carries for 43 yards while Trenton Cannon heaved one 39 yard touchdown pass to secure the win for Virginia State.
Ayres, Bellamy, and Cannon each scored one touchdown in the win. Gene Holloman hauled in four receptions for 68 yards and scored one touchdown.
Jonathon Pearson led the Trojan defense with nine tackles (six solo, three assisted) while Erin Pettiford and Geo Feggins each added seven tackles.
At the 9:10 mark in the first quarter, Watkins connected with Prince on a seven yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks on the board. The play capped an eight play, 65 yard drive and gave Chowan an early 6-0 advantage.
Nick Hahula made good on the point after attempt to leave the Trojans trailing 7-0. Virginia State regrouped midway through the first quarter and used Cannon's 29 yard touchdown run to get on the board. Mathew Hillquist made good on the point after attempt to knot the score 7-7.
Lee gave Chowan the upperhand with 12:58 on the clock in the second quarter as his six yard touchdown run successfully concluded a five play, 61 yard drive. Hahula made good on the point after attempt resulting in a 14-7 advantage for the Hawks. Virginia State answered back at the 8:48 mark when Ayres broke through for a seven yard touchdown run.
The Hawks had the last word before halftime when Watkins' 20 yard scamper extended Chowan's lead to 20-13. Hahula made good on the point after attempt and the Hawks headed into halftime with a 21-13 lead.
With 9:31 on the clock in the third quarter, Watkins connected with Lombard on a 34 yard touchdown pass. A successful point after attempt by Hahula left Virginia State looking to recover from a 28-13 deficit.
The Trojans persistently chipped away at the deficit to earn the victory. Hillquist made good on two field goal attempts; one with 6:46 left in the third quarter (33 yards) and one at the start of the fourth quarter (24 yards).
With 7:44 left in the game, the Trojans used a six yard touchdown run by Bellamy to close out a nine play, 82 yard drive. Hilquist made good on the point after attempt, leaving the Hawks clinging to a narrow 28-26 lead. The Trojans sealed the victory with 2:06 left in the game when Holloman heaved a 39 yard pass to Cannon to confirm the 32-28 win.
Chowan heads to The Lincoln University on November 7
th to conclude the 2015 season. Kick-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 1:00pm.
