Hawks Come out on Top of CIAA Northern Division Match against Virginia Union

Box Score MURFREESBORO- CLICK HERE TO VIEW PHOTO GALLERY The Chowan University volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over Virginia Union University in CIAA Northern Division play on Sunday evening.  With the win, the Hawks advance to 14-15 on the season and remain perfect against league competition with an 11-0 mark against CIAA opponents.  The Lady Panthers slide to 7-9 overall and drop to 5-4 in league play. 

Sunday was Senior Night for the Hawks.  Cindy Ehrich, Kelsey Schlake and Brianna Smith were all recognized prior to the contest. 

Chowan earned  a 25-16 win in the opening match and topped the Lady Panthers 25-10 before falling to Virginia Union 25-22 in set three.  The Hawks recovered to top the Lady Panthers 25-14 in set four to secure the 3-1 match win. 

Fernanda Faustino led all players in the contest with 12 kills for Virginia Union and also tallied 15 digs.  Natalia Gascot added 12 digs for the Lady Panthers while Esha Atkins dished out 31 assists and 10 digs. 

Ashley Tutherow paced the Hawks with 10 kills in the victory.  Suraya Chase, Morgan Spencer, and Smith all tallied six kills apiece for Chowan while Becca Page and Lindsey Denne notched 22 and 14 assists, respectively.  Ehrich led all players in the match with 16 digs followed by Denne with 11 digs.

In set one, the Hawks trailed 9-8 before four errors by the Lady Panthers gave Chowan a 12-9 advantage.  Chowan maintained a narrow lead as the set continued on.  Holding on to a 15-14 advantage, a 5-0 run for the Chowan Blue and White pushed the Hawks ahead 20-14.  With the score 21-16, a kill by Tutherow followed by thee kills by Chase secured the 25-16 for the Hawks.

In the second set, Chowan quickly raced to a 19-5 lead to take control of the momentum before securing the 25-10 victory in set two. 

Chowan and Virginia Union battled through the midway point of the third set with neither team able to gain a firm grasp of the momentum.  With the score tied 12-12, the Lady Panthers scored four straight points behind Faustino's serves to pull away 16-12.  Virginia Union held on to the lead from that point forward and secured the 25-22 set victory with a kill by Ariana Bethel. 

The Hawks battled back in the fourth set and quickly rolled to a 10-5 advantage.  Chowan built their lead to as many as ten points (22-12) before securing the 25-14 win on a Virginia Union service error. 

The Hawks continue CIAA play October 31st- November 1st as Chowan travels to Virginia State University to compete in the CIAA Round-Up.
