Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team rolled to their tenth straight win on Monday evening with a 3-0 victory over the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings. The Hawks improve to 11-3 overall with the win and remain perfect in CIAA competition with an 8-0 record. Chowan has swept nine of their last ten opponents in straight sets. The Lady Vikings fall to 1-10 overall on the season with the setback and drop to 1-7 in the league.
The Hawks won set one 25-15, set two 25-5 and set three 25-16.
Monday night's contest was also the Hawks' Dig Pink match, with all proceeds raised benefitting the Side-Out Foundation.
Morgan Spencer led all players in the match with 11 kills for the Chowan Blue and White.
Ashley Tutherow added seven kills in the victory while
Suraya Chase Princess Chauni Green each tallied six kills apiece.
Becca Page and
Lindsey Denne dished out 15 and 12 assists, respectively, while
Cindy Ehrich hauled in 13 digs for Chowan.
Emmesha White grabbed a team-high six kills for Elizabeth City State while Lauren Burgess and Krystal Sawyer tallied six assists apiece. Sawyer and White also led the Lady Vikings' defensive efforts with nine digs each.
In the first set, with the score tied 2-2, the Hawks rattled off three straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Holding a 7-4 advantage, Chowan extended their lead to 15-4 all behind Ehrich's serves to take control of the momentum. The Hawks never surrendered the lead and closed out the set with a 4-0 run, clinching the 25-15 set win on a Lady Viking attack error.
Chowan nearly kept Elizabeth City State off the scoreboard in the second set. The Hawks scored ten consecutive points behind Page's serves to set the tone right from the start. After handing the Lady Vikings one point off a Hawk attack error, Chowan cruised to a 19-1 advantage, scoring eight of those points behind
Caitlin Pascal's serves. The Lady Vikings scored four points in the remainder of the second set with three occurring thanks to service errors by the Hawks, before suffering the 25-5 setback.
Elizabeth City State refused to go away quietly in the third set and jumped to an 11-8 lead. A kill by
Sydney Bell made the score 11-9 and returned service to Chowan's side. Denne took over from there as she sparked a 8-0 run for the Hawks resulting in a 17-11 advantage. The Hawks held on to the lead for the remainder of the contest and used a kill by Green to earn the 25-16 victory.
Chowan continues CIAA Northern Division play and returns to action on October 18
th and 19
th when the Hawks travel to Bowie State University and The Lincoln University, respectively.
