Hawks Close out Janet Collins Invitational with Split

Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team closed out the second day of play at the Janet Collins Invitational with a 3-2 loss to Converse College and  3-0 win over the Saint Augustine's University Lady Falcons on Saturday afternoon. 

Brianna Smith led all players in the contest with 15 kills in the loss.  Melanie Chaussee chipped in 12 kills in the first match while Cindy Ehrich hauled in 19 digs.  Brianna Smith added 16 digs while Jordan Miller added 13 digs to aid the effort.  Allison Smith collected 41 assists in the opening match.  The Valkyries were paced by Katie Butler with 12 kills while Krislyn Moore hauled in 12 digs for Converse. 

The Valkyries won the first point of the first set with a kill by Katie Butler and never looked back.  The maintained the lead for the entire set and captured a quick 25-15 win to start off the match.  The second set was more closely contested.  The Hawks fought back to tie the score 16-16 with a kill by Miller, but a kill by Butler for Converse returned the momentum to the Valkyries.  Chowan was unable to regain the lead and fell 25-20 in set two. 

The third and fourth sets were all about the Hawks as Chowan won both sets by double-digit differentials.  The Valkyries mustered just six kills over the course of those two sets and committed 13 errors.  The momentum shift was short-lived for the Hawks as they collected just three kills in the fifth set and fell to Converse 15-5. 

Suraya Chase paced the Hawks in the second match of the afternoon with 10 kills for Chowan.  Brittany Tschida and Miller grabbed 6 kills apiece while Allison Smith and Kelsey Schlake combined for 29 assists. Ehrich had 16 digs for Chowan.  Danyelle Noland notched a team-high five kills for the Lady Falcons while Julieesa Thomas tallied 14 assists.

The Hawks took a quick 3-0 lead in set one of the second match using kills by Tschida and Chaussee and a service ace by Schlake.  Chowan used a series of three runs including a 7-0 run off of Chase's serves to easily grab a 25-12 win in the first set.  The second set was more closely contested but the Hawks held on to an early lead and overcame multiple errors at the end of the set to secure the 25-19 win over Saint Augustine's.  Chowan went to work in the third and final set, holding the Lady Falcons to five kills while forcing 10 errors.  With a commanding 19-9 lead, a Saint Augustine service error led to a 6-0 run for the Hawks to secure the 25-9set win and 3-0 match victory over the Lady Falcons. 

The Hawks end the weekend with a 2-2 record while Converse starts the season 4-0.  Saint Augustine's returns to Raleigh with an 0-4 mark. 

Chowan returns to action on September 10th when they travel to the University of Mount Olive for a 7:00pm match.
