Hawks' Streak Comes to an End with 3-0 Loss to Winston-Salem State

Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team saw a ten match win streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Winston-Salem State University at the CIAA Round-Up.  The loss was the first of the season for the Hawks in CIAA play.  Chowan moves to 12-4 on the year and 8-1 in the league, while the Lady Rams improve to 6-7 overall and 6-2 against CIAA competition. 

Suraya Chase led the effort for the Blue and White with nine kills, followed by Melanie Chaussee with seven kills.  Allison Smith tallied 20 assists in the loss while Cindy Ehrich hauled in 15 digs for the Hawks.  Sydney Holland paced the Lady Rams with a career-high 20 kills in the match.  Kayla Brass totaled 37 assists while Haley Miller and Olivia Owens collected double-digit digs. 

The Lady Rams grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first set, and never surrendered control from that point forward.  A kill by Chase let in the set brought the Hawks within two points (22-20), but two kills and a block secured the 25-20 win for Winston-Salem State in the first set. 

Winston-Salem State picked up where they left off at the start of the second set.  The Hawks were left trailing 4-0 and were never able to recover.  The Lady Rams grabbed the second set 25-17 and secured the victory with a kill by Chelsea Violenes. 

The Hawks used a two Lady Rams' attack errors, a service ace, and kill by Brianna Smith to gain a 4-0 lead at the start of the third set.  Chowan held on to the lead until midway through the match when Winston-Salem State used a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set.  The Hawks and Lady Rams battled for control from that point forward.  With the Hawks trailing 23-19, a kill by Chaussee led to a 5-0 run which gave Chowan a 24-23 lead.  A Hawk service error knotted the score 24-24, and Winston-Salem State used blocks from Holland and Darissa Jones to clinch the 26-24 victory. 

The Hawks return to action on October 2nd when they take on Virginia State University.  First serve is slated for 6:00pm in Petersburg, Virginia.
