Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team earned their eighth straight win on Thursday evening with a 3-0 victory over Claflin University. The Hawks edged the Lady Panthers 28-26 in the first set, 26-24 in set two, and 25-18 in the third set. Chowan improves to 10-3 on the season while Claflin moves to 9-6 overall with the loss.
Nikira Fults notched a team-high 12 kills in the win followed by
Suraya Chase who had eight kills for the Hawks.
Cindy Ehrich 23 digs for the Blue and White while
Allison Smith notched 28 assists. Bria Bronston paced the Lady Panthers with 13 kills in the loss and Courtney Person had 17 digs. Caleen Hawkins had a match-high 29 assists for Claflin.
The Hawks and Lady Panthers battled for control early in the first set. Claflin held a narrow 14-11 lead midway through set one and held on to the advantage, but the Hawks clawed their way back to tie the score 25-25 using a kill by Fults. The Lady Panthers used a kill by Bronston to knot the score, but an attack error and block by Chase and
Brittany Tschida secured the 28-26 victory.
With the score tied 7-7 in set two, a Lady Panther attack error led to a 5-0 run for the Hawks. The score was tied nine times from that point forward, but the Hawks used a service error and attack error to clip Claflin 26-24 in the second set.
The Lady Panthers earned the first point in set three on a kill by Bronston, but from there it was all about the Hawks. Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest, closing out the set with a 25-18 win and 3-0 match victory.
The Hawks return to action this weekend when they travel to the CIAA Round-Up hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.
