Hawks Handle Lady Vikings

Suraya Chase had 16 kills for the Hawks on Thursday.
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team clinched their fourth straight win on Thursday evening with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings.  The Hawks improve to 6-3 overall and remain undefeated in CIAA play with a 4-0 mark after the win.  The Lady Vikings slip to 2-7 on the season and 2-2 in league play with the loss.  The contest marked the first CIAA Northern Division match for both teams.
 
Suraya Chase led all players in the contest with 16 kills in the victory.  Melanie Chaussee tallied 12 kills while Jordan Miller chipped in 11 kills for the Blue and White.  Allison Smith tallied 50 assists to aid the effort and Cindy Ehrich hauled in a match-high 20 digs. The Hawks overcame 34 team errors to earn the victory.

Rosetta Becerra paced the Lady Vikings with 11 kills while Krystal Sawyer notched 14 kills.  Emmesha White and Tracie Twin collected 12 and 11 digs, respectively. 

Elizabeth City State stole the momentum late in the first set to grab a 26-24 victory.  With the score tied 19-19,  kills by Nikira Fults and Chase gave the Hawks a 21-19 edge.  The Lady Vikings battled back to knot the score 22-22 and used back-to-back kills by Kelsey Smith to pull away 24-22 before securing the 26-24 set victory with a kill by Becerra. 

In the second set, the Hawks jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, taking advantage of Lady Viking errors and service aces by Brianna Smith and Tschida.  With the Hawks trailing 8-7, an attack error by Elizabeth City State sparked a 7-1 run for Chowan.  The Hawks held onto the lead for the remainder of the set, earning the 25-20 victory to knot the match 1-1. 

The Hawks used a 4-0 run at the start of the third set and led by as many as 11 points (21-10) before securing the 25-10 victory.  Chowan grabbed a 3-0 lead at the start of the fourth set using an ace by Allison Smith, and kills from Chase and Chaussee.  The Hawks never trailed in the final set of the contest and overcame six ties to outlast the Lady Vikings 25-15.  The win in set four clinched the 3-1 match victory for the Hawks. 

Chowan returns to action on September 19th when they host Johnson and Wales.  First serve is slated for 6:00pm in the Helms Center.
