DANVILLE, VA- The Chowan University women's tennis team earned a 9-0 victory over Averett University on Friday afternoon. The Hawks begin the 2014-15 season 1-0 with the win while the Cougars embark on the new season 0-1.
Chowan swept Averett in doubles and singles competition. In doubles play,
Natalya Kamenshchikova and
Victoria Smolchenkova defeated Hannah Mattson and Morgan Epstein 8-0.
Polina Novachuk and
Natalia Andrade earned an 8-0 victory over Jessie Gomes and Kaitlyn Meadows while
Straffai Cleveland and
Jessica De Backre topped Jewel Dale and Shleby Dryen 8-0.
The Hawks rolled by the Cougars in singles play. Kamenshchikova picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mattson in the number one position while Novachuk, De Backre and Smolchenkova all grabbed 6-0, 6-0 victories over their opponents in the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively. In the fifth spot, Andrade defeated Meadows 6-1, 6-0 while
Jennifer Humphrey blanked Dryden 6-0, 6-0 to secure the 9-0 win for Chowan.
The women's tennis team was originally scheduled to compete against West Liberty on September 13
th. The match has been cancelled to due to pending inclement weather in the area. The Hawks return to action on October 3
rd when they compete in the Hampton Roads Invitational.
