Mount Olive Outlasts Chowan

Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team dropped a five set thriller to the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday evening.  The Hawks move to 2-3 on the season with the setback while the Trojans improve to 2-3 overall. 

Brianna Smith notched a team-high 14 kills over the course of the evening followed by Melanie Chaussee with 11 kills.  Allison Smith collected 45 assists while Cindy Ehrich tallied 28 digs.

Britni Johnson led all players in the contest with a match-high 18 kills.  Montgomery Register and Alysha Burnett were close behind with 14 kills and 13 kills, respectively.  Samantha Winfield posted 55 assists for the Trojans while Casey Fietcher hauled in 28 digs. 

Chowan won the first two sets in the match before the Trojans stole the momentum and closed out the match with three straight set victories.  With the score knotted 11-11 in set one, a service error by Mount Olive and an ace by Suraya Chase put the Hawks in the lead.  Trailing 18-15, a kill by Chaussee and an attack error by the Trojans led to Chowan securing eight of the last ten points for the 25-21 win. 

The Hawks and Trojans battled through the second set to establish control with neither team leading by more than two points the entire set.  Down 23-22, two Mount Olive errors and a kill by Chaussee clinched the 25-23 set victory for the Hawks. 

The final three sets were all closely contested, but it was the Trojans that came out on top in the match.  In the third set, with the scored tied 20-20, kills from Register, Johnson, and Alysha Burnett along with two Chowan miscues secured the 25-21 victory in favor of Mount Olive.  The Hawks fell behind again in the third set after a kill by Register with the score knotted 12-12 and were never able to overcome the deficit resulting in a 25-22 win for the Trojans. 

Chowan led by as many as four points (9-5) in the fifth and final set but Mount Olive refused to back down.  With the Hawks leading 11-7, Mount Olive used a 6-0 run to take a 13-11 advantage before closing out the set with a 15-13 victory.
